Spring Clean Your PC: Edinburgh Tech Tips for 2026

Spring is the perfect time to spring clean your PC — and we don't just mean wiping down the keyboard. A seasonal health check can significantly improve your computer's performance, extend its lifespan, and reduce the risk of unexpected failures. Whether you're in Edinburgh or anywhere else, these practical steps will leave your machine running noticeably better.

1. Declutter Your Files and Free Up Storage

Over months and years, computers accumulate a surprising amount of digital clutter: old downloads, duplicate photos, large video files, and temporary data left behind by programmes. A full hard drive forces your system to work harder, slowing everything down.

Start with the obvious — go through your Downloads folder and Desktop, and delete anything you no longer need. Then use Windows' built-in Disk Cleanup tool (search for it in the Start menu) to remove temporary files, system caches, and old Windows update files. On a typical system, this alone can recover several gigabytes of space.

If your drive is genuinely running low on space, it may be worth considering a storage upgrade. Our hardware upgrade service can fit a larger or faster SSD quickly and affordably.

2. Uninstall Programmes You No Longer Use

Open Settings > Apps and scroll through the list of installed programmes. It's common to find software installed years ago that hasn't been opened since — old games, trial applications, toolbars, and utilities you've long since forgotten. Uninstalling these frees up storage and, in some cases, removes background processes that are quietly consuming memory and CPU.

Pay particular attention to programmes that run at startup. Head to Task Manager > Startup apps and disable anything that doesn't need to launch automatically when Windows boots. This is one of the quickest ways to reduce boot times without spending a penny.

3. Clean Your Physical Hardware

Dust is one of the most underestimated threats to a computer's health. It builds up inside cases and laptops, blocking airflow, causing components to overheat, and ultimately shortening their lifespan. If your PC's fans are audibly louder than they used to be, or if the machine feels warm to the touch, dust is the likely culprit.

For desktop PCs, turn off and unplug the machine, take it outside if possible, and use a can of compressed air to blow dust out of the vents, fans, and heatsinks. Work in short bursts to avoid spinning the fans too fast.

Laptops are trickier. The vents on the underside and sides can be carefully blown out with compressed air, but opening a laptop for a deeper clean is best left to a professional — improper disassembly can damage delicate components. If your laptop is running hot, see our laptop care tips, or our home callout service can carry out a safe, thorough clean at your convenience.

Don't forget the peripherals: wipe down your keyboard, mouse, and monitor with a dry or lightly dampened microfibre cloth. Keyboards in particular can harbour more bacteria than a toilet seat — spring is a good time to address that.

4. Update Windows and Your Drivers

Keeping Windows up to date is one of the most important things you can do for both performance and security. Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for any pending updates. It's not unusual to find several waiting if you've been putting them off.

Beyond Windows itself, check that your device drivers — particularly for your graphics card, network adapter, and motherboard chipset — are current. Outdated drivers can cause crashes, poor performance, and compatibility issues. You can update most drivers through Device Manager or by visiting the manufacturer's website directly.

5. Run a Full Security Scan

Spring is an ideal time to do a thorough security audit. Run a full scan with Windows Defender (or your preferred antivirus), not just a quick scan — a full scan checks every file on your system and can catch threats that a quick scan might overlook.

Review your browser extensions too. Adware and browser hijackers often install themselves silently alongside legitimate software. Remove any extensions you don't recognise or no longer use.

If you suspect your machine has already been compromised, or if the scan finds something it can't remove, our virus and malware removal service will carry out a deep clean and ensure nothing is left behind.

6. Check That Your Backups Are Working

A backup that hasn't been tested is a backup you can't rely on. Spring is a good prompt to verify that your backup solution is actually running and that your files are recoverable. Try restoring a file or two to confirm everything is working as expected.

If you don't yet have a backup strategy in place, now is the time — read our full guide on how to back up your PC data. A simple approach is the 3-2-1 rule: keep three copies of your data, on two different storage types, with one stored off-site (or in the cloud). A hard drive failure, accidental deletion, or ransomware attack can happen without warning — don't wait until it does to set up a proper backup.

7. Consider a Fresh Windows Installation

If your PC has been running for several years without a clean install, accumulated software, registry clutter, and misconfigured settings can drag performance down in ways that are difficult to address individually. A fresh Windows installation wipes the slate clean and gives you a fast, stable starting point.

This is worth considering if your machine has become noticeably slower over time, even after trying the steps above. We carry out clean Windows installs regularly, transferring your personal files safely and getting everything set up the way you like it.
